    What it means

Literally, “It has never happened that an egg taught the hen.” The image is deliberately absurd — an egg cannot know more than the hen that laid it. The proverb implies that the young and inexperienced should not presume to instruct or correct those who are older and wiser. In modern usage Poles apply it humorously when a junior person tries to teach or correct a senior one. It belongs to a rich tradition of barnyard metaphors in Polish folk wisdom.

    English equivalent

Don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs.

    Vocabulary

    • jeszcze — yet, still (temporal adverb)
    • nie było — there was not (negated past tense of być 'to be,' impersonal)
    • by — so that, in order that (conditional/purposive particle introducing the subordinate clause)
    • jajko — egg (neuter, diminutive of jajo)
    • kura — hen (feminine noun; accusative: kurę)
    • uczyło — taught (past tense neuter of uczyć 'to teach')

    Grammar note

'Jeszcze tego nie było' uses the genitive 'tego' because negated existential constructions in Polish take the genitive instead of the nominative: 'to nie było' (nominative) → 'tego nie było' (genitive after negation). The subordinate clause introduced by 'by' uses the past tense of 'uczyć' with the neuter ending '-ło,' agreeing with the neuter subject 'jajko.' This construction is equivalent to English 'so that the egg would teach.'

    Cultural context

This is a distinctly old-fashioned proverb, more likely to be heard from an older speaker or read in literary texts than used in casual conversation among younger Poles. It carries a mildly ironic or scolding tone. The English equivalent 'don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs' shares the same intergenerational dynamic but uses a different image.
