    What it means

Literally “for lack of lacquer” or “for lack of sealing wax.” It means as a last resort, for want of anything better, or by default — doing something only because nothing else is available. The expression comes from the old practice of sealing letters with wax; if you had no proper sealing wax, you would use whatever substitute you could find. Today it is used when someone settles for a second-best option, accepts a situation reluctantly, or is clearly not someone’s first choice.

    Vocabulary

    • z — from, for (preposition governing genitive)
    • brak — lack, absence (noun, genitive: braku)
    • lak — sealing wax (noun, genitive: laku)

    Grammar note

The preposition 'z' governs the genitive case: 'braku' is the genitive of 'brak,' and 'laku' is the genitive of 'lak.' This is a fixed prepositional phrase and functions as an adverbial modifier. In modern usage, 'lak' (sealing wax) is otherwise nearly obsolete, which gives the phrase an archaic, slightly ironic flavour.

    Cultural context

This is an informal, widely understood phrase with a self-deprecating or ironic edge. Poles use it to acknowledge that a choice is a compromise: 'Wzięli go z braku laku' (They took him for lack of anyone better). The closest English equivalents are 'for lack of anything better,' 'by default,' or 'faute de mieux.'
