    What it means

Literally “at the beginning.” This is the standard way to denote the starting point of a story, a time period, or a physical location. It is the natural antonym to “na końcu.”

    Vocabulary

    • początek — beginning / start
    • najpierw — first of all

    Grammar note

'Początku' is the locative case of 'początek'. The letter 'e' disappears (mobile 'e') during declension: początek -> początku.

    Cultural context

Commonly used at the start of sentences to set the scene: "Na początku było trudno..." (In the beginning, it was difficult...).
